Our Process
Two ways we clean a roof
Every roof is different. After inspecting yours, we recommend soft washing, brushing and blowing, or both — depending on how much moss and buildup has accumulated.
Method 1
Soft washing
A low-pressure, chemical-based treatment that kills moss, algae, and lichen at the root rather than scraping it off the surface — the method most shingle manufacturers recommend for roof safety.
Pre-treat
A diluted, roof-safe cleaning solution is applied to affected areas to break down organic growth.
Dwell time
The solution sits and works into moss and algae for several minutes, killing it below the surface — no scrubbing required.
Low-pressure rinse
Rinsed at garden-hose-level pressure, far below a pressure washer, so shingle granules and roofing mat stay untouched.
Best for regular maintenance and light-to-moderate moss or algae.
Method 2
Brushing & blowing
A hands-on mechanical clean for roofs with heavy moss buildup or years of neglect that a chemical treatment alone won't lift.
Hand brushing
Soft-bristle roof brushes are worked along the shingle grain to physically lift thick moss clumps, lichen, and caked-on debris.
Controlled technique
Brushing follows the shingle's natural lay with light, even pressure — never scraped against the grain — so granules stay in place.
Blow-off & gutter clear
Backpack blowers clear loosened moss, needles, and grit from the roof plane, valleys, and gutter line.
Best for heavy moss buildup or as a first pass before soft washing.
A note on roof material
Asphalt and cedar shake roofs can usually take either method. Tile roofs are soft-washed only — walking and brushing on tile risks cracking, so we treat and rinse without ever stepping on or scrubbing the surface. Metal roofs are also soft-washed, using low pressure and a metal-safe solution to protect seams, fasteners, and factory coatings from the higher pressure or abrasion a brush can cause.
